A Little History...

The history of Rancho Sisquoc Winery is fascinating to me.

I always marvel at the people who saw a vision with the land they purchased, even if it wasn’t for their generation’s total growth.

But they bought and worked hard to make it what it was, not even seeing the final results.

Generation after generation, hard work and determination, produced an amazing place called Rancho Sisquoc Winery.

It all started with the arrival of James C. Flood, in 1850, who was looking for opportunity and sunshine.

In 1875, the San Ramon Chapel was built and later became the entrance to Rancho Sisquoc.

Around 1882, the Flood Family decided to farm and ranch in California.

In 1952, James C. Flood’s grandson, Jim and his wife, Betty, continued in the tradition and bought the historic Rancho Sisquoc.

They ran Rancho Sisquoc as a cattle ranch, mostly, but added beans and grain to their farming also.

In 1960, they planted their first vineyard. In 1966, the San Ramon Chapel became the first official landmark in Santa Barbara County.

After years of learning how to make wine, the Flood’s produced their first wine in 1972.

Betty drew the label of the San Ramon Chapel for the wine bottles. In 1973, the building for wine tasting was completed.

In 1977, Rancho Sisquoc Winery officially opened to the public. As of 2020, they are producing about 15,000 cases of wine.

The original ranch house of 1900’s is used by the Flood family and they remain in charge of

the ranch and operations of the winery still to this day.

We were able to reserve tables online and had a large family reunion there on the property. It was a wonderful time to just hang out and enjoy a picnic with our loved ones. By being there, we were able to enjoy the fresh air and the beautiful landscape. It is very dog friendly, as well. We hope you enjoyed reading about the history of Rancho Sisquoc Winery and can plan to check it out in your travels.
